How Long Does PCB Prototype Assembly Take in Europe? Realistic Lead Times

Lead time is decided before the order is placed. This is where the days go and how to get them back.

· by Kari Rantakoski

Short answer: A fully assembled PCB prototype from a European EMS typically takes 10–15 working days from complete files to shipment: 1–2 days for quote and DFM review, 5–10 days for bare boards and components, 2–3 days for assembly and 1–2 days for test and dispatch. Expedited runs of 5–8 working days are possible when the bare PCB is quick-turned and every component is in stock. Component availability, not assembly capacity, is the usual reason a date slips.

Where the days actually go

Quote and DFM review1–2 working dayssame dayComplete Gerber, BOM, pick-and-place
Bare PCB fabrication5–8 working days2–3 working daysLayer count, standard stack-up, standard finish
Component procurementin parallel, 3–10 daysin stock onlyAlternates in the BOM, no long-lead parts
SMT/THT assembly2–3 working days1–2 working daysPanelisation, no manual rework
Test, inspection, shipping1–2 working days1 dayTest spec agreed up front

The four things that decide the date

  • Component availability: one part on 16-week allocation delays the whole board. A BOM with alternates is the single biggest lead-time saver.
  • Bare PCB complexity: 4-layer, ENIG, standard tolerances ship in a week; HDI, blind vias and controlled impedance add days.
  • File completeness: every missing polarity mark or unclear BOM line costs a question-and-answer cycle.
  • Test readiness: if the test procedure exists before the boards do, the last day is a day, not a week.

Key facts

  • Standard prototype: 10–15 working days from complete files.
  • Expedited prototype: 5–8 working days, parts in stock and quick-turn PCB.
  • A missing or ambiguous file adds 1–3 days per question cycle.
  • Comtec Labs runs prototypes on the same SMT lines as series production, so the prototype is the process qualification.

How to shorten your next prototype

Order the bare PCB and the long-lead components at the same time as the assembly, freeze the BOM before layout is complete, and agree the test procedure with the manufacturer during the DFM review. Comtec Labs reviews every prototype for manufacturability before the first board is built, which removes most of the questions that would otherwise arrive on day three.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an assembled PCB prototype in one week?

Yes, when the bare board is a standard 2–6 layer build, every component is available from stock and the files are complete. Typical expedited time is 5–8 working days.

What is the longest part of PCB prototype lead time?

Component procurement. Bare PCBs and assembly are predictable; a single allocated part is not.

Does consigned material shorten lead time?

Only if it arrives kitted and labelled. Partial or unlabelled kits usually add time.

Do you build prototypes in Finland?

Yes. Comtec Labs assembles prototypes and series in Vaasa, Finland, on the same production lines.
